IVF Process – Step-by-Step Guide

At Amrit Hospital, we follow an advanced, transparent, and patient-centric IVF process designed to maximize your chances of a healthy pregnancy. Our experienced fertility specialists use the latest reproductive technologies, modern labs, and compassionate care to support you at every stage of your fertility journey.

What is IVF?

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is an assisted reproductive technique where eggs are retrieved from the ovaries, fertilized with sperm in a controlled laboratory setting, and the resulting embryo is transferred into the uterus.
This procedure is recommended for couples facing infertility due to:

  • Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes

  • Severe male factor infertility

  • Endometriosis

  • Ovulation disorders (like PCOS)

  • Unexplained infertility

  • Advanced maternal age

Our IVF Process

1. Initial Consultation & Fertility Assessment

Your IVF journey begins with a detailed evaluation that includes:

  • Medical history review
  • Hormonal tests
  • Ultrasound scan
  • Semen analysis

Discussion of previous treatments (if any)

Our fertility expert creates a personalized treatment plan based on your health, age, and diagnosis.

2. Ovarian Stimulation

The female partner receives hormonal injections for 8–12 days to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple mature eggs instead of one.

We monitor progress through:

  • Regular ultrasound scans
  • Blood hormone tests

Medication doses are adjusted for safety and optimal response.

3. Egg Retrieval (Ovum Pick-Up)

When the eggs are ready, a minor procedure is performed:

  • Done under mild sedation
  • A thin needle retrieves the eggs via the vaginal route
  • No incisions and minimal discomfort
  • Same-day discharge

The eggs are immediately sent to our IVF lab.

4. Sperm Preparation

On the same day, a semen sample is collected from the partner or donor.
The sample is processed to select the healthiest, most motile sperm for fertilization.

5. Fertilization (IVF / ICSI)

Two methods may be used:

Conventional IVF

Eggs and sperm are placed together in a culture dish for natural fertilization.

ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection)

A single healthy sperm is directly injected into each mature egg — ideal for severe male infertility or previous IVF failures.

6. Embryo Culture & Growth

Fertilized eggs are grown in the lab for 3–5 days until they develop into healthy embryos.

Our embryologists closely observe:

  • Cell division quality
  • Growth rate
  • Genetic health (if PGD/PGS testing is chosen)

Only the best-quality embryos are selected for transfer.

7. Embryo Transfer

A painless, short procedure performed without anesthesia:

  • A fine catheter places the embryo into the uterus
  • Usually done on Day 3 or Day 5 (blastocyst stage)
  • You can resume normal activities soon after
  • Any extra high-quality embryos can be frozen (cryopreserved) for future use.

8. Luteal Phase Support

After embryo transfer, supportive medications are prescribed to help implantation and maintain uterine lining thickness.

9. Pregnancy Test

After about 12–14 days, a blood test (β-hCG) confirms whether the embryo has implanted successfully.

If positive, ultrasound scans follow to check fetal development and heartbeat.
